Light Attaching to a Girl is a family affair. #LainaBarakat directed her sister #ClareBarakat as the lead. Indeed, the whole familial brood plays a part.
Clare is on the cusp of adulthood, but has always been in the shadows of her sisters. There’s a scene in a bakery where each of the 3 girls are allowed to get any cupcake they want. Her sisters think it would be cool if they all got red velvet, but young Clare wants to try something else. She ends up caving, which is a pattern.
She has planned a trip for herself. She’s trading in her hometown of Keene, NH for Iceland, at least temporarily. She’s on her own. While there are always stumbling blocks, it’s the overcoming of them that makes any trip worth taking. Clare thrives in this new world, even as she’s remembering the past.
I’m f I had a complaint, it’s that the #film is only about an hour long. I wanted more. It’s a truly independent effort & not Barakat’s 1st. She’s got characterization down pat.
Really liked this 1. Hit me in the feels, especially because I’ve been where Clare’s been, not Iceland, but traveling to faraway places on my own. So, I can relate.
